After graduating in medicine from University of Western Ontario, Dr. Baala completed a general surgery residency and achieved board certification by the American Board of Surgery. He then complete a fellowship year in minimally invasive surgery at University of Ottawa before following with a hepatopancreaticobiliary surgery fellowship at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 2007. In 2010, Dr. Baala complete a Masters in Medical Education at University of Dundee in Scotland. He currently works as an associate professor of surgery at the Ottawa Hospital and is the director of the High Risk Specialty Program at Saegis, a CMPA subsidiary. He is also a frequent contributor to the examination committee of the Royal College and acts as mentor through the Vertical Mentorship Program of the uOttawa's faculty of medicine.
